Kansas is a Midwestern state in the United States. Topeka is the state capital, and Wichita is the largest city. Kansas is a landlocked state that is bounded to the north by Nebraska, to the east by Missouri, to the south by Oklahoma, and to the west by Colorado. The state of Kansas was called after the Kansas River, which was named after the Kansa Native Americans who lived on its banks. The tribe’s name (natively kk:ze) is often translated as “people of the (south) wind” however, this was most likely not the original meaning. What is now Kansas was home to various and diverse Native American tribes for thousands of years.
