Environmental Considerations During the project, special care was taken to remove rocks and shells from the dredged sand to maintain the quality and safety of the nourished beaches. Significant environmental concerns were addressed, including protecting sea turtle nests and two protected foraging shorebirds: the tiny sand-colored, sparrow-sized Piping Plover and the reddish, medium-sized Red Knot. These efforts and safeguarding other seabirds were crucial to the project’s environment and stewardship.
