GIWW
VENICE, FL W912EP-19-C-0019

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Venice Dredging Project, Sarasota County, Florida

Project Overview The Venice Dredging Project involved critical maintenance dredging operations within the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) and Venice Inlet to address shoaled areas and restore navigational depths. This project aimed to maintain safe and efficient passage through the waterways and enhance the beach quality along the coast.

Scope of Work

  • Dredging Requirements:
    • Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW): Dredging to a depth of 9 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) with an additional 2 feet allowable over depth.
    • Venice Inlet: Dredging to a depth of 7 feet MLLW with an additional 1 foot allowable over depth.
  • Material Placement:
    • All dredged material was classified as beach quality.
    • The material was deposited in a designated beach disposal area immediately south of the inlet, contributing to beach nourishment and coastal stability.

Incidental Work

  • Turbidity Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of water turbidity to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimize impacts on aquatic habitats.
  • Environmental Species Monitoring: Surveillance for protected and sensitive species to mitigate potential disruptions to local wildlife.
  • Vibration Monitoring: Monitoring vibrations to assess and manage potential impacts on nearby structures and ecosystems.
  • Beach Fill Quality Control: Ensuring that the quality of the sand placed on the beach met the required specifications and contributed positively to beach restoration.

TITAN’s Role and Contributions Titan Consultants provided essential quality control and environmental monitoring services for the Venice Dredging Project:

  • Quality Control Management:

    • Oversight of Dredging Operations: Ensured that dredging activities were conducted according to project specifications, including depth requirements and material quality.
    • Verification of Beach Fill: Monitored the quality of the sand placed in the beach disposal area to ensure it met the necessary standards for beach nourishment.
  • Turbidity Testing:

    • Regular Testing: Conducted routine turbidity testing to track the concentration of suspended particles in the water and ensure compliance with environmental guidelines.
    • Impact Management: Implemented measures to minimize turbidity and its effects on marine ecosystems.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

  • Environmental Protection: The project adhered to stringent environmental regulations to protect local wildlife and habitats, including monitoring for endangered species and managing potential impacts.
  • Safety Measures: Ensured that all operations were conducted safely, with ongoing assessments of vibrations and turbidity to safeguard the environment and public health.

Project Highlights

  • Scope of Work: Maintenance dredging of shoaled areas in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) and Venice Inlet, with material placement in a beach disposal area south of the inlet.
  • Dredging Depths: Required depths of 9 feet MLLW with 2 feet allowable over depth and 7 feet MLLW with 1 foot allowable over depth.
  • Material Quality: Beach-quality sand is used for disposal and nourishment.
  • Incidental Work: Included turbidity monitoring, environmental species monitoring, vibration monitoring, and beach fill quality control.
  • TITAN’s Contributions: Provided Quality Control Management and Turbidity Testing, ensuring compliance with project specifications and environmental standards.

Through comprehensive quality control and environmental monitoring, Titan Consultants played a vital role in successfully executing the Venice Dredging Project, enhancing maritime safety, and contributing to Sarasota County, Florida, beach restoration efforts.
