Savannah Harbor Dredge Material Containment Area (DMCA) 14A Project
The Savannah Harbor DMCA 14A is designated primarily for the storage of naturally occurring cadmium-containing materials excavated during the deepening of the Savannah River. This project is essential for maintaining navigational efficiency and environmental safety in the harbor.
Project Overview
Water Control Structures:
- Construction of Three Weirs: Within the DMCA 14A/14B cross dike, three new water control weir structures will be constructed. These weirs are crucial for managing water flow and ensuring the efficient processing of dredged materials.
- Bonneted Knife Gate Valve: A new bonneted knife gate valve will be added to the outfall pipe of weir 14B4, located in the easternmost portion of DMCA 14B. This valve will play a pivotal role in controlling water discharge.
- Temporary Closure of Existing Weirs: Three existing weirs along the back dike of DMCA 14B will be temporarily closed. This measure will prevent excess water from being released prematurely.
- Berm Construction: A berm will be constructed across DMCA 14B, extending from the outfall of the new weirs to weir 14B4. This berm will effectively separate the discharge area for excess dredge water from the rest of DMCA 14B.
Environmental and Quality Control Measures
- Water Quality Standards: The addition of the new bonneted knife gate valve, along with the temporary closure of existing weirs, ensures that no excess water is released until it meets stringent water quality standards. This is critical for protecting the surrounding waterways and maintaining environmental compliance.
- Controlled Water Discharge: The new weirs in the DMCA 14A/14B cross dike will allow for controlled passage of excess dredge water through DMCA 14B, facilitating safe discharge into the surrounding waterways.
