BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Channel Deepening Project

Project Overview: This project involves deepening a channel to improve navigability and accommodate larger vessels. The project will achieve a target depth of 29 feet below the Low Water Datum, including 1 foot of required over-depth and 1 foot of allowable over-depth. Approximately 300,000 cubic yards of material, comprising bedrock (Jacobsville Sandstone) and overburden material, will be removed.

Scope of Work

  • Channel Deepening:
    • Target Depth: The channel will be deepened to 29 feet below the Low Water Datum, with an additional 1 foot of required over-depth and 1 foot of allowable over-depth to ensure consistent navigational depth.
    • Material Removal: The project will involve the excavation of approximately 300,000 cubic yards of material, including:
      • Bedrock: Jacobsville Sandstone, a durable sedimentary rock.
      • Overburden Material: Various sediments and loose materials overlay the bedrock.
  • Monitoring and Protection of Nearby Structures:
    • Structural Monitoring: Continuous monitoring will be conducted to ensure the stability and integrity of nearby structures, including:
      • Lock Walls: To prevent any impact or damage to the lock walls during dredging operations.
      • Highway and Railroad Bridges: To safeguard these critical infrastructure elements from potential vibrations or destabilization caused by dredging activities.
  • Material Disposal:
    • Upland Disposal Site: All dredged material will be transported to an upland disposal site adjacent to the work area. This proximity minimizes transportation distances and environmental impact.
    • Disposal Management: Proper handling and disposal techniques will be employed to ensure environmental compliance and efficient site management.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

  • Environmental Monitoring:
    • Turbidity Control: Measures will be in place to monitor and manage water turbidity levels, ensuring minimal impact on water quality during dredging operations.
    • Wildlife Protection: Precautions will be taken to protect local wildlife and aquatic habitats, adhering to environmental regulations.
  • Safety Management:
    • Safety Protocols: Comprehensive safety protocols will be implemented, including risk assessments, regular site inspections, and safety training for all personnel.
    • Vibration Monitoring: Specialized monitoring will ensure that vibrations from dredging do not compromise the structural integrity of nearby bridges and lock walls.

TITAN’s Role and Contributions

  • Quality Control Management:
    • Oversight: TITAN will oversee quality control aspects of the dredging operations, ensuring all work meets specified standards and project requirements.
    • Inspection and Documentation: Regular inspections and thorough documentation will be conducted to verify compliance with project specifications and regulatory guidelines.
  • Safety Management:
    • Safety Supervision: TITAN will provide safety supervision and training to ensure all personnel adhere to safety standards and best practices.
    • Hazard Mitigation: Proactive measures will be taken to identify and mitigate potential hazards, ensuring a safe working environment.

Project Highlights

  • Enhanced Navigation: The deepening of the channel will improve navigability, allowing larger vessels to pass and increasing the efficiency of maritime traffic.
  • Structural Integrity: Continuous monitoring will ensure that critical infrastructure, such as lock walls and bridges, remains unaffected by dredging activities.
  • Efficient Disposal: The proximity of the upland disposal site will facilitate efficient material handling and minimize environmental impact.

The channel deepening project is a significant undertaking that aims to enhance navigational capabilities and ensure the safety of nearby structures. TITAN’s expertise in quality control and safety management will ensure the project is executed to the highest standards, benefiting maritime operations and the surrounding environment.
