DIKE REHABILITATION
MIAMI, FL W912EP-13-C-0027

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Lake Okeechobee Dike Culvert Replacement Project

The Lake Okeechobee Dike Culvert Replacement project focused on upgrading the existing infrastructure by replacing culverts five and 5A. This significant project was essential for enhancing the safety and functionality of the dike system, which plays a crucial role in flood control and water management in the region.

Project Overview

Culvert Replacement Details:

  • Triple 10 x 10 Cast-in-Place Concrete Box: The existing culverts were replaced with a robust triple 10 x 10 cast-in-place concrete box structure, complete with a liner pipe. This new structure was designed to improve the durability and capacity of the trenches, ensuring reliable performance.
  • Construction Activities: The project involved several critical construction activities to achieve the replacement and upgrade of the culverts.

Key Construction Activities:

  • Surcharge Mound Construction: A surcharge mound was constructed to prepare the site for the new structure. This process helps to stabilize the ground and ensure a solid foundation for the new culverts.
  • Demolition and Removal: The existing culvert structures were carefully demolished and removed for the new installation.
  • Temporary Earth and Sheet Pile Cofferdams: Temporary earth and sheet pile cofferdams were installed to facilitate safe construction. They provided a dry and stable work area and prevented water intrusion during construction.
  • By-pass Pumping: By-pass pumping was implemented to manage water flow and maintain site conditions, ensuring uninterrupted construction activities.
  • New Cast-in-Place Reinforced Concrete Structure: A new reinforced concrete structure was constructed on-site. This cast-in-place approach ensured precision and quality in the final installation.
  • Internal Drainage System and Cutoff Wall: Within the barrier, an internal drainage system and cutoff wall were constructed. These features are critical for managing water flow and maintaining the integrity of the dike.

Environmental and Structural Benefits

Enhanced Safety and Functionality:

  • Improved Flood Control: The new culverts significantly enhance the dike system’s flood control capabilities, ensuring better water level management and reducing the risk of flooding.
  • Durability and Reliability: The cast-in-place concrete structure provides increased durability and reliability, ensuring long-term performance and reduced maintenance needs.

Environmental Protection:

  • Controlled Water Management: The internal drainage system and cutoff wall help control water flow, minimizing erosion and protecting the surrounding environment.
  • Sustainable Construction Practices: The project incorporated sustainable construction practices, ensuring minimal environmental impact during construction.

Role of Titan Consultants

Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO): Titan Consultants provided the SSHO for the Lake Okeechobee Dike Culvert Replacement project. Their responsibilities included:

  • Safety Management involves ensuring that all construction activities comply with safety regulations and best practices, protecting workers and the environment.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Verifying adherence to local, state, and federal guidelines, particularly environmental protection and construction standards.
  • Quality Assurance: Overseeing the quality of the construction process, ensuring that the new culverts met all project specifications and objectives.

Conclusion

The Lake Okeechobee Dike Culvert Replacement project represents a critical upgrade to the region’s flood control infrastructure. The project ensures enhanced safety, functionality, and environmental protection by replacing the existing culverts with a robust cast-in-place concrete structure and implementing advanced construction techniques. Titan Consultants’ SSHO was vital in maintaining safety, compliance, and quality throughout the project’s execution.
