DOLPHIN REPLACEMENT
NEW ORLEANS, LA W912P8-19-C-0073

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Dolphin Construction and Guide Wall Replacement Project

Project Overview This project involves the comprehensive demolition and replacement of existing timber guide walls and concrete and steel pile cellular dolphins. It includes the construction of a new concrete bullnose dolphin and related incidental work to enhance the structural integrity and functionality of the marine facility.

Scope of Work

Demolition and Removal:

    • Timber Guide Wall: Complete demolition and removal of the existing timber guide wall.
    • Concrete and Steel Pile Cellular Dolphins: Remove outdated concrete and steel pile cellular dolphins, including any associated debris and obstructions.

Construction of New Bullnose Dolphin:

    • Pipe Pile Driving: Installation of new pipe piles to form the structural framework for the bullnose dolphin. This involves driving steel or concrete piles into the seabed to support the dolphin structure.
    • Concrete Slab Placement:
      • Below Waterline: The base of the concrete slab will be placed below the waterline to ensure a stable foundation for the dolphin.
      • Above Water Concrete Placement: Pouring and setting concrete above the waterline to complete the dolphin structure, ensuring durability and structural integrity.
    • Stairs and Handrails: Stairs and handrails will be installed to provide safe and accessible access to and from the dolphin.
    • Rub Rails: Rub rails are installed to protect dolphins from damage and wear caused by contact with vessels.
    • Miscellaneous Metalwork: Fabrication and installation of other related metal components and structures required for the dolphin, including supports, fittings, and brackets.

Incidental Work:

    • Site Preparation: Clearing and preparing the site for demolition and construction activities, including removal of any obstructions and ensuring a safe working environment.
    • Environmental Protection: Implement measures to protect the marine environment during construction, including sediment control and debris management.
    • Quality Control: Conducting inspections and tests to ensure all construction activities meet design specifications and quality standards.

Key Considerations

  • Safety Compliance: Adherence to all safety regulations and standards during demolition, construction, and installation phases to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the facility.
  • Coordinate with Marine Traffic: Manage construction activities to minimize marine traffic and operations disruption.
  • Environmental Protection: Ensuring all environmental protection measures are in place to prevent contamination and protect marine life during construction activities.
  • Structural Integrity: Ensuring the new bullnose dolphin and associated structures are built to withstand marine conditions and provide long-term durability.

Project Benefits

  • Enhanced Functionality: The new bullnose dolphin will improve the marine facility’s functionality, providing better mooring and protection for vessels.
  • Increased Safety: Upgraded structures, including stairs and handrails, will enhance safety for personnel and visitors.
  • Improved Durability: Using concrete and metal components will ensure the new dolphin is robust and resistant to wear and environmental conditions.

The Dolphin Construction and Guide Wall Replacement Project aims to modernize and strengthen critical infrastructure at the marine facility, providing a safer and more functional environment for vessel operations and aquatic activities.
