MAINTENANCE DREDGING
LONG ISLAND, NY

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Long Island Intracoastal Waterway Maintenance Dredging Project at Moriches Bay

Project Overview The New York District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) commissioned the maintenance dredging of the Long Island Intracoastal Waterway (LIIW) Federal Navigation Project at Moriches Bay. This project involved removing up to approximately 110,000 cubic yards (CY) of sand from the waterway, with the dredged material being placed along the shoreline of Smith Point County Park. A 10,000 – 20,000 CY upland stockpile was also created for future use. The placement area was approximately 3 to 4 miles from the dredging site. The project aimed to achieve a dredging depth of -6 feet of Means Lower Low Water (MLLW) with an additional 2 feet of allowable over depth.

Dredging Operations

  • Hydraulic Cutterhead Dredge: The primary dredging was performed using a hydraulic cutter head dredge, which efficiently removed sand from the waterway.
  • Support Equipment: The operation required the use of barges, tugboats, pipelines, and land-based equipment such as dozers to facilitate both the dredging and placement activities.
  • Material Placement: Dredged material was transported and placed along the shoreline of Smith Point County Park to enhance coastal resilience and provide additional beach area. An upland stockpile of 10,000 – 20,000 CY was also established for future use.

Compliance and Regulations The project adhered to all federal, state, and approved local criteria required by government agencies with jurisdiction over the dredging and placement sites. Ensuring compliance with these regulations was crucial for the project’s successful execution.

Environmental and Safety Considerations Environmental stewardship was a key focus throughout the project. Measures were taken to minimize the environmental impact of the dredging and placement activities. Strict safety protocols were also implemented to protect the workforce and the surrounding environment.

TITAN’s Role and ContriTITAN’s Sonsultants provided essential safety oversight for the project by assigning a dedicated Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO). The SSHO’s responsibilitiesSSHO’sdeSSHO’sety Management:
