MAINTENANCE DREDGING SACO RIVER
SACO, ME W912WJ-18-C-0037

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Saco River Federal Navigation Project

Project Overview The Saco River Federal Navigation Project involves dredging a portion of the federal navigation channel near the entrance of the Saco River. The project’s primary goal is to maintain and improve vessel navigability by removing accumulated sediments and ensuring the channel and anchorages meet the required depth specifications. The project encompasses dredging an 8-foot deep entrance channel and three 6-foot deep anchorages. Approximately 41,000 cubic yards (CY) of material will be dredged, with an additional 36,000 CY of material removed to allow for a 1-foot allowable over depth.

Dredging Operations

  • Entrance Channel: The dredging work includes restoring the entrance channel to a depth of 8 feet. This is crucial for maintaining safe passage for vessels entering and exiting the Saco River.
  • Anchorages: The project also involves dredging three anchorages to a depth of 6 feet. These anchorages provide safe mooring and anchoring areas for vessels, ensuring they can navigate and dock without risk of grounding.
  • Material Removal: The total volume to be dredged is approximately 41,000 CY. Additionally, up to 36,000 CY of material will be removed to achieve the 1-foot allowable over depth, ensuring the channel and anchorages maintain their required depths over time.
  • Equipment and Techniques: The project employs advanced dredging equipment, such as cutterhead or clamshell dredges, to efficiently remove the sediment. The dredged material is transported to designated disposal or placement sites.

Logistics and Coordination

  • Material Transport: The dredged material is transported to pre-approved disposal sites, ensuring minimal environmental impact and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordination: The project requires careful coordination with local authorities, maritime agencies, and environmental bodies to ensure smooth execution and adherence to timelines and regulations.

Environmental Considerations The Saco River dredging project is conducted with a strong emphasis on environmental protection. Measures are implemented to minimize the impact on the river’s ecosystem, including:

  • Sediment Management involves ensuring that the dredging process minimizes turbidity and sediment dispersion.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: Regular monitoring of water quality to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to protect aquatic life.
  • Wildlife Protection: Protective measures will be implemented for any sensitive wildlife habitats in the project area, ensuring minimal disruption to the local flora and fauna.

TITAN’s Role: Titan Consultants played a pivotal role in ensuring the project’s quality and compliance by providing quality control (QC) management services. Titan’s contriTitan’s included:

  • Quality Control Management:

    • Overseeing the dredging operations to ensure they met project specifications and quality standards.
    • We conduct regular inspections and assessments to promptly identify and address quality issues.

    • We monitor water quality and implement measures to protect aquatic life and habitats.
    • We coordinate with environmental agencies and stakeholders to ensure ecological guidelines and best practices are adhered to.

Project Highlights

  • Scope of Work: Dredging an 8-foot deep entrance channel and three 6-foot deep anchorages, removing approximately 41,000 CY of material, with an additional 36,000 CY for allowable over depth.
  • Equipment: Utilization of advanced dredging equipment for efficient sediment removal.
  • Environmental Focus: Adherence to environmental regulations and protection of the surrounding ecosystem.
  • Titan’s ContTitan’sns: Provision of Quality Control Management Services, ensuring strict quality and environmental standards adherence.
