BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Port Canaveral Beach Re-nourishment Project (1995)

Project Overview In 1995, the Port Canaveral Beach Re-nourishment Project was initiated to address significant erosion and restore the beaches along a 3.5-mile stretch of coastline. This major federal project, valued at $18 million, aimed to revitalize the beaches from Jetty Park at Port Canaveral to south of Cocoa Beach Pier. As the most extensive beach re-nourishment project in the Port Canaveral area, it represented a critical effort to enhance coastal resilience and protect beachfront properties.

Scope of Work

  • Beach Restoration: The project involved dredging and placing sand to restore and stabilize 3.5 miles of beaches. The restoration work extended from Port Canaveral’s Jetty Park to an area south of Cocoa Beach Pier.
  • Sand Placement: The sand was sourced and transported to the project site to replenish and fortify the eroded beach areas, improving the coastline’s aesthetic quality and functional capacity.

Operational Details

  • Timeline and Access: The construction work resulted in temporary restrictions on public access to sections of the beach within approximately 1,000 feet of the active construction zones. These restrictions were in effect for about three to four days at a time, ensuring safety and efficient completion of the restoration activities.
  • Construction Impact: The temporary access restrictions were necessary to facilitate safe and effective dredging and sand placement operations while minimizing disruption to the public.

TTITAN’sRole and Contributions Titan Consultants played a vital role in ensuring the successful execution of the Port Canaveral Beach Re-nourishment Project by providing essential safety management services. TTitan’scontributions included:

  • Site Safety and Health Officers (SSHO):
    • Provision of SSHOs: Titan provided two Site Safety and Health Officers (SSHO) to oversee safety protocols throughout the project.
    • Safety Oversight: The SSHOs were responsible for monitoring construction activities, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and addressing potential hazards to protect construction personnel and the public.
    • Safety Inspections: Regular inspections were conducted to maintain a safe working environment and minimize risks associated with dredging and sand placement activities.

Environmental and Community Considerations

  • Environmental Protection: The project was designed to restore natural beach conditions, enhance coastal resilience, and support the local ecosystem.
  • Community Impact: The pproject’stemporary restrictions on beach access were managed to minimize inconvenience to the public, with safety measures in place to ensure a smooth and efficient restoration process.

Project Highlights

  • Scope of Work: Restoration of 3.5 miles of beach from Jetty Park to south of Cocoa Beach Pier, involving dredging and sand placement.
  • Value: $18 million federally funded project.
  • Access Restrictions: Temporary public access restrictions within 1,000 feet of construction zones for three to four days.
